Call for participation: an ubuntu default theme lead by the community?

No problem . Are you able to move it over to the D2D,thread ?

Iā€™m testing the 18.04 with Community Theme for a while now and, guys, itā€™s an amazing work. Finally a modern look for Ubuntu without using third party themes.

Just some personal suggestion.
In my opinion, the brown colour of the windows decoration is a bit old, better than the previous theme but anyway old. I would prefer the use of the black (like Unity8) or, better, of a dark blue.

Second, Ubuntu should have the application button at the top of the dash (or dock), not at the bottom. Or, better, the user should be able to choose where to put it.

Apart from these things, the new look of Ubuntu is so charming.
Really nice work, congrats guys.

Will the Plymouth theme be changed as well as part of this initiative?

Also, there were a few discussions on GitHub regarding aubergine vs. orange color.

Apparently aubergine is considered to not be associated with Ubuntu, hence why it will not be used (with the exception of the terminal background color for some reason).

That being said. Will the Plymouth theme and the lockscreen background be changed from aubergine to orange?

First of all, I want to thank every designer involved in this. Great work. I am looking forward to the final release.
Regarding the Plymouth theme. I find that the two most beautiful Plymouth themes are the theme of the elementaryOS and the kde NEON. Both use a total black background with white logos. Despite the fact that I prefer light colors on DEs, I believe that black gives a look and feel of a more professional setup. I donā€™t know, maybe it is just me, but these colors combination gives the feel that the boot time is shorter as well, probably because it is so minimal, not fancy, not bright at all, that you donā€™t concentrate on the boot screen. Since black is one of the colors that will be used in the new theme, as it has been in the Unity 8 shell theme, I found it quite consistent with the new theme, especially in case that there is a thought of using orange as the main color of the lockscreen .
Just a piece of thought. Of course, the designers are the experts to decide.

Aubergine isnā€™t part of the color palette for UI elements like buttons, checkboxes, borders, etc.

Plymouth isnā€™t (currently) part of the community theme.

@kakosf As per https://design.ubuntu.com/brand/ubuntu-logo/ the following color combinations could be used for Plymouth. Either white on black or white on orange would probably be a fresh breath of air for the Plymouth theme (deprecating the white on aubergine that is currently being used). The Circle of Friends logo could replace the current Wordmark.

Way back in the past, someone once proposed the following Plymouth theme for Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail:

Maybe one could take inspiration from the Ubuntu XPS edition startup animation:

?

Thatā€™s modern looking, like it!

Thatā€™s cool, but itā€™s a DELL thing (also, my SSD notebook would have been started 3 times during the animation )

Yeh . It takes waaaaay to long . But I do agree it could use a make over in fact all the flavours could.
Compared it to the likes of elementary and pop its in the dark ages.

Personally, I think my favorite boot splashes to date comes from Karmic:

This is the animation for the very first startup only.

@c-lobrano I was referring to the design, not the animation itself. Besides, itā€™s often not true that you see Plymouth just for a brief moment. Instead, thousand of Enterprise users as well as privacy aware users will see it while they type their full disk encryption passphrase. While you are being prompted for the passphrase, the Plymouth animation is even being paused.

Therefore I would suggest as little animation as possible and make the theme as static as possible.

So, this is the current Plymouth theme:

https://camo.githubusercontent.com/8a3d3c36475012ef6f2bca850444678a6db5c590/68747470733a2f2f692e737461636b2e696d6775722e636f6d2f43614a42732e706e67

It could simply be changed to have a orange background and the white on orange logo with white dots (please note that the following theme is not showing the 100% accurate Ubuntu orange color):

Also, the logo could be changed to the circle of friends logo as shown in the following theme:

Thoughts?

For the Plymouth theme and specifically for the loading animation, one could also take inspiration from that Ubuntu Touch circle:

Or this (it seems to be official but uses a different orange tone compared to the original Ubuntu orange):

@luxamman So, other orange tones are also allowed?

New thread has been created
Called ā€œboot animationā€.

So .
What is the status of our community theme ?
Is it ready ?
Will it make 18.04 or 18.10 ?
